| | > Main Research Field | | My research filed is divided into three parts. First is a site investigation of earthquake damage and its analyses. I visited severely damaged areas more than 20 earthquakes in the world and 30 in Japan so far. Mexico, San Francisco, Turkey, Philippine, India, Bam and etc. were in reconnaissance. Based on the site investigation, cause of damage, lessons for seismic design and disaster mitigation preparedness have been discussed. | | Second is the research on dynamic response analyses and design consideration for bridge structure, buried civil structure and lifelines. The researches are focused on seismic input ground motion, design spectra, dynamic experiments of buried structures, and new design concept. Fault dislocation, liquefaction and land slide as well as wave propagation have been taken into consideration for the design of civil structures. Moreover, a new analytical tool of a Modified Discrete Element Method is introduced in our analysis besides the ERAUL (Earthquake Response Analysis for Underground Lifelines) computer program which has been developed by author and widely used in Japan. | | Third is the seismic reliability analysis of lifeline systems such as power, water, sewage, gas and telecommunication. Functionality of lifeline systems has been analyzed by employing various system theories. Seismic damage estimate, restoration and reconstruction process have been discussed in the actual existing huge lifeline networks. In the analyses, a recent advanced technology like as IT fields has been applied to the systems. In the recent research topics, the new concept of life-saving lifelines is proposed through the long history of research activity, which emphasize the importance of lifelines related to human lives during and after strong earthquakes. | | Last, I experienced the 1995 Kobe earthquake as one of citizen in Kobe and did a lot of contribution for the reconstruction of Kobe City as well as the new seismic design codes of lifelines in Japan applying the knowledge studied so far. I am thinking that we have a mission to talk about our experience of the Kobe earthquake to mitigate earthquake disaster. |
