These engineers are highly needed for feasibility studies, planning and design purposes in civil engineering projects, and also for the precise dimensional control for accurate setting out and for any necessary as-built survey during the construction phase and also, on certain projects, for post construction survey and deformation monitoring. Regarding the recent technological advancements in the field of surveying and mapping and the availability of satellite positioning systems, remotely sensed satellite imageries and the land/geospatial information manement systems, the scope of the department s research and educational activities was subsequently extended to offer Ph.D. and M.Sc. degree programs in the related fields in geomatic engineering including: Geodesy, Photogrammetry, Remote sensing, Geospatial/Land Information Systems (GIS/LIS), Hydrography. The department is located in the second campus of the Faculty of Engineering and houses 17 laboratories. These labs include aerial and close range photogrammetry and machine vision labs equipped with modern analytical and soft copy stereo restitution machines as well as precise metric and non-metric analogue and digital cameras. GIS/LIS and remote sensing labs include image processing and geospatial data processing and handling workstations. Satellite geodesy lab. includes several double frequency GPS receivers. The department is also equipped with modern electromagnetic distance measurement instruments and variety of total stations, theodolites and levels for precise ground and mine surveying activities and echo-sounders for hydrographical survey. Presently, there is 13 full time academic staff in the department, including 3 Associate Professors, 9 Assistant Professors, and 1Lecturer.The Department has recently extended its research links with the mapping organizations and the related sections in industry and managed to contribute successfully in conducting several research projects which have had nationwide impacts.
