Smart ship routing; a big step in sustainable and green maritime transportation
According to the Public Relations Department of the College of Engineering, in a new study, researchers at the University of Tehran have succeeded in establishing an optimal balance between economic and environmental indicators by presenting a multi-objective mixed integer programming (MILP) model for the Aeolian Islands region in the Tyrrhenian Sea.
This model, which was designed under the guidance of Dr. Reza Tavakoli Moghadam, a professor at the School of Industrial Engineering, College of Engineering, and student Negin Niazi, focusing on the technical characteristics of ship engines, has opened a new path for reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions in the maritime industry.
In this study, an MILP model with four main objectives has been developed that simultaneously evaluates economic aspects and environmental sustainability.A notable feature of this study is the use of the main engine technical parameters of the ships, including engine power, load factor, and capacity, to accurately calculate fuel consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. The efficiency of the proposed model was tested in two different scenarios using the advanced computational method AUGMECON2.
The numerical results of this study show that the use of modern navigation methods and the use of different types of ships can improve the performance of the transportation system by up to 54.4%.
This significant improvement not only leads to the optimization of energy consumption in the maritime fleet, but also effectively reduces greenhouse gas emissions and contributes to the goals of sustainable development in the shipping industry.
